ADHD In Adulthood
Bipolar Disorder in Childhood and Adolescents
Dr. Restum participated in a panel discussion about Bipolar Disorder at the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) building in Clinton Township. At this meeting, approximately 50 educators from Macomb and surrounding counties previewed a Detroit Public Television documentary entitled No Ordinary Joe. Following the preview of the documentary, educators and the panel of community experts shared information about Bipolar Disorder to increase understanding and effective management of this often misunderstood condition.
The importance of Bipolar Disorder for those dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) lies in the close relationship between these conditions, especially in childhood and adolescence. The fact that they have a number of symptoms in common, such as inattention, restlessness and impulsivity, makes it difficult to determine in some cases if an individual should be diagnosed with one condition or the other or both. Since treatment of these conditions can be very different, proper diagnosis, which includes a painstaking review of past and present behavior patterns, personal and family histories, and, in some case, psychological testing, is essential.
Finally, the documentary No Ordinary Joe initially aired on Detroit Public Television in 2004. The program includes comments from experts at leading research facilities about the ongoing battle against mental illness and statement from Joe’s friends and family members about the anxieties that impact this nation’s youth and their families.
