Dr. Velinova shares the following information
about this challenging condition:

Eating Disorders include Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa and others that do not have all of the characteristics needed to diagnosis these more well known conditions. These are referred to as Eating Disorder Not Other Specified and include binge eating and other problematic patterns of eating.

All eating disorders involve unhealthy thoughts (including beliefs), emotions, and behaviors related to food, eating, body image and weight.

Factors that may contribute to eating disorders include low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, other mental health issues, relationship problems, history of being teased about weight, history of abuse, cultural pressures about body weight and body image, and unknown genetic and biological variables. Although eating disorders are traditionally considered women's issues, approximately 10% of the individuals seeking help are males.

If left untreated, an eating disorder can negatively impact multiple areas of the person?s life, such as physical health (e.g., gastrointestinal, dental, liver and kidney, heart, fertility, bone health and even lead to death), psychological functioning (e.g., depression, anxiety, low self-esteem), social life (e.g., difficulty forming friendships and intimate relationships), education, and career.

Early detection and intervention are very important for successful recovery. Treatment requires a multi-disciplinary team including practitioners with various areas of expertise; behavioral health counselor or therapist, primary care physician, registered dietician and possibly a psychiatrist. Research suggests that cognitive-behavioral and, in some cases, interpersonal therapy, are the most effective psychological treatments for disordered eating.
